About this opportunity from Mid and South Essex ICB NHS
Volunteers are currently required to assist hospitals across Mid and South Essex, especially in an emergency situation. The aim is to alleviate the work carried out by nurses, which can be undertaken by volunteers, for instance a Ward Runner to take items between wards or other parts of the hospital.
We ask that volunteers are able to commit to at least four hours of their time per month. They will be asked to agree to undertake training, be DBS checked and provide photographic ID to protect the vulnerable patients.
The opportunities involve them providing days and times of a week when we can call upon them should the need arise, possibly in an emergency situation, for example; staff sickness, absences or a sudden influx of patients. It is not a regular slot each week for which the volunteer has specified their availability.
The opportunities are listed below, but are quite fluid and will be revised as a need is identified.
Mealtime Companion Volunteer and Catering Runner
The purpose of this role is to improve patient nutrition by providing feeding support and social care at mealtimes, resulting in better nourished and hydrated patients and assisting Catering staff with the handing out of meals.
Administration Support Volunteers
This could involve meeting and greeting visitors to the wards and taking their temperatures.
Administration and Discharge Volunteer
The purpose of this role is to assist patients on arrival or discharge from hospital. Discussing and assisting the patient to be signposted to the correct services, such as EWS for help with weight loss management, smoking cessation etc, or The Cinnamon Trust who provide care for pets whilst the owner is in hospital. Pamphlets will be provided dealing with these organisations. Volunteers will be asked to familiarise themselves with the pamphlets, enabling patients to be signposted to the correct organisations and support.
The purpose of this role would be to assist staff needing to transfer items to or from the ward, thus allowing staff to concentrate on their duties.
Providing Ambulance Crews with Refreshments
This role will involve the making of refreshments for the ambulance crews between calls.
The purpose of this role is to provide friendship, conversation and activities for those people living with dementia
