Befriender Volunteer
Would you be able to support adults in crisis? Working from home, as a befriender volunteer, you will help them address the challenges in their day-to-day lives making them believe life is for living.
About this opportunity from Reach Out For Mental Health
Reach Out for Mental Health (ROFMH) is a suicide prevention service supporting individuals living with suicidal thoughts. It offers individuals an opportunity to talk about what they’re going through. This could be recent events or things from the past. We know sometimes talking can be difficult, we also know it can really help. Our befriending service is run by a small team of volunteers who are friendly, good listeners and genuinely want to make a positive difference to those going through a tough time. People are also welcome to talk about suicidal feelings they may be experiencing because again talking can help.
A volunteer’s role is simple yet incredibly effective; to create a space for the individual to feel heard, valued and understood. This then provides an environment for the individual to reflect on what they have discussed. How they feel and their options. With our coaching programme this can help the individual to build a proactive toolkit to help build their mental health resilience.
Reach Out for Mental Health need volunteers to operate our phone-based service. We ask for a commitment of 1 to 3 hours per week. You can support up to 3 clients a week, for up to ten weeks. This will be from your own home, we provide a mobile phone so all contact with clients is kept separate. You will also be required to attend monthly group clinical supervision which is delivered online.
There will be two online information sessions to find out more about the role and the Charity. You only need to attend one. They take place on Tuesday 15th October from 6-7pm and Wednesday 16th October 12-1pm. Please email us at info@reachoutfmh.co.uk and request a link for the time you’d like to attend.
Training for the role takes place on Saturday 19th October 2024 online between 10am-4pm. A link will be sent to you AFTER you have attended an information session. You will not be able to commence your role as a volunteer without undertaking the training first.
No qualifications necessary but personal experience of mental health problems/ living with suicidal thoughts or supporting someone else is preferable.
