About this opportunity from Southend Libraries

As a Library Assistant your role will be to support customers in using our five branch libraries and their facilities. You will meet new people, pass on your love of reading and become a vital link in the local community. Our branch libraries would be unable to run without the support of our volunteers, so your help is vital.

Tasks will include issuing and returning books using our computer system, shelving and tidying, locating requested items and answering customers’ enquiries. Supporting customers in using our IT facilities is another key part of this role. Volunteers also help to prepare displays and maintain the appearance of the library, to ensure we offer an appealing and welcoming environment.

Volunteering opportunities are available at Kent Elms, Leigh, Shoeburyness, Southchurch and Westcliff Libraries (please note we do not currently employ volunteer library assistants at the Forum Library). Kent Elms, Shoeburyness and Southchurch Libraries have an onsite car park. Leigh Library has on street parking and a pay and display car park a short walk away. On street parking is available at Westcliff Library. Travel expenses can be reclaimed within the Southend boundaries.

You should be reasonably IT literate and have good levels of literacy and numeracy.
Customer service experience would be an advantage but full training will be provided.
You should have the physical ability to move library resources and trolleys, with the ability to be on your feet for extended periods.
You will need to be able to commit to at least one regular four-hour shift per week.
