Could you compassionately support someone who has just been assaulted or lost a loved one? How do you think you would cope when required to talk someone down from a bridge who wants to harm themselves? Do you have the courage to walk into a public order situation and physically restrain individuals who are fighting? Could you investigate gang culture, drug supply, fraud or corruption?

If the answer is yes, then apply to join the Essex Police family as a Special Constable. Essex Police are looking for Special Constables across all of Essex. Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers, they have the same police powers, uniforms and equipment as regular Police Officers.

A Special in Essex is someone who will be valued, supported and integrated into the wider policing family. They’re someone who will learn new skills, see new things and make tangible differences to the lives of the public they serve. A Special in Essex is someone who makes new friends, sees life from new perspectives and upholds the law.

Skills

Our Specials come from a variety of backgrounds, some are stay at home mums, some are ex-military, some in retail, beauticians, accountants and teachers to name a few. Whatever their background, their skills have brought something unique and valuable to their officer role.

To become a Special Constable you must:

• be a British, Commonwealth or European Economic Area (EEA) citizen or have leave to remain in the UK for an indefinite period

• have resided in the UK for a continuous period of three years immediately

• be at least 18 years old

• be of good character (ideally you should not have a criminal record but some minor offences may not exclude you)

• be able to meet our required medical and fitness standards prior to the date of your application.

– Commit to a minimum of 16 hours per month for operational duties plus mandatory initial training and on-going training.

Commitment

Minimum of 16 operational hours a month with an extra 2 hours a month for ongoing mandatory training ran at both evenings and weekends.
